Holiday Giving Nurtures the Community that Supports the Space and Tech Ecosystem

HUNTSVILLE, AL – December 2021 – This is the most rewarding time of year to give back—so many people need a lift in spirits and material circumstances at the same time. Huntsville has a unique culture where giving done by private businesses often has a face. The Huntsville community is a diverse tapestry that invigorates every business and government agency here behind the economic growth: it’s how we not only attract new talent, but also inspire new ventures by homegrown talent, making Huntsville a great place to raise a family and have fun. We are interwoven and stronger because of it. The way we treat the vulnerable or needy this time of year demonstrates a regard for the entire tapestry.

Giving back is not a seasonal part of Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation’s (INTUITIVE®) culture and it’s not a burden foisted upon unsuspecting new hires. INTUITIVE is known for Virtual Reality, additive manufacturing, program management, hypersonic expertise, and a variety of high concepts among peers, but in Huntsville and other field locations, they are also known for being on the scene in good and bad times: sponsoring city Apollo celebrations, outfitting the U.S. Space and Rocket Center with a new planetarium, partnering with local schools to provide STEM instruction and hosting book drives, gathering supplies and support for hurricane victims, and giving away a free app to help those in storm-prone areas catalogue belongings. Last year, the company couldn’t have its year-end review celebration due to COVID-19 challenges. Instead, they allowed each employee to decide how he or she wanted to give back an allotment of the usual celebration costs to the community. Earlier this year, the company donated a tractor to the CASA of Madison County community garden to give homebound elderly better access to fresh vegetables.

All the same, some of the most festive giving indeed happens this time of year to key disadvantaged groups: homebound elderly and children in need. CASA counts on INTUITIVE every year to purchase and help personally deliver meals to homebound elderly and disabled individuals for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Further, employees from INTUITIVE help purchase gifts listed by CASA and the National Children’s Advocacy Center on behalf of those they serve. From the Ft. Walton Beach field office, the company participates with Meals on Wheels to deliver around 100 meals per Thanksgiving.

CASA of Madison County has been helping seniors age with dignity for more than 40 years. CASA’s mission is to enable the aging and home-bound to live at home independently, safely, and with dignity. Their volunteer-performed services include increasing home accessibility and comfort, providing transportation, delivering nutrition, and even performing yard work or basic repairs. Help is dispensed based solely on need, without regard to income, race, social status, or religion.

The National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC), located in Huntsville, Alabama, revolutionized the United States’ response to child abuse. Since its creation in 1985, the NCAC has served as a model for the 1000+ Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) now operating in the United States. The CAC model of a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) approach pulled together law enforcement, criminal justice, child protective services, and medical and mental health workers onto one coordinated team. They focus on intervention and support.

INTUITIVE employees look forward to using a virtual angel tree to choose gifts that range from practical to purely fun: shoes, prescription glasses, tennis rackets, Legos, e-readers, etc. Any chance to give a child something to shape their future in a small way brings warmth to employees that support relatively serious programs (after all, INTUITIVE works on matters of national security).

Some INTUITIVE employees are compelled to become workshop elves on behalf of the United Cerebral Palsy’s Technology Assistance for Special Consumers (TASC). Their engineers actually help adapt Christmas toys and electronics to be usable by those with special needs. Maybe yesterday they were solving a problem with a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and today they are adapting drone controls for a child who has always felt left out—perhaps even fostering this child’s ability to become a budding aerospace engineer.

INTUITIVE prioritizes local charities who work across all demographics. They’ve contributed to organizations such as the Downtown Rescue Mission, a charity that supports adults and children through poverty and recovery. In years past, INTUITIVE contributed around 1,000 boxes of Thanksgiving staples and thousands in Christmas gifts to the Rescue Mission.

The community spirit started with INTUITIVE’s top leadership, but over 500 employees have accelerated the giving and helped explore new ways to make a difference to the community that rounds out their own lives. The numerous personal community connections established each year makes the holiday season the most cheerful and heartfelt in INTUITIVE’s offices. These charitable endeavors set the tone for even better years to come, for aerospace and defense contractors and those in their home orbit.
