HUNTSVILLE, AL – July 2019 – On July 16, 2019, at 8:32 a.m., The U.S. Space & Rocket Center attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most rockets launched simultaneously. Guinness World Record’s review team is analyzing the attempt and will determine the results of the launch in the coming days.
The idea to break this record, was inspired by their participation in a worldwide event: The Global Rocket Launch Challenge. Gathering to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the Apollo 11 mission, provided Huntsville with the opportunity to make another mark in history.
Huntsville is known as the “Rocket City”; credited for the design and manufacturing of the Saturn V rocket. Fifty years later, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center designed 5,000 model rockets that would earn them another place in history.
With the sponsorship and support from Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation (INTUITIVE®), this dream became a reality. INTUITIVE Chairman Harold Brewer said, “Sponsoring this event was a small step in our next giant leap. Having the opportunity to gather our community was a reminder of the shared interest of billions of viewers during the Apollo 11 launch in 1969.”
Volunteers met over the last few weeks for multiple sessions to assemble rockets. This morning at 5 a.m. volunteers from INTUITIVE and other supporting organizations met at the launch site to finish production and arranged the rockets for launch.
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center successfully engaged the Huntsville community to participate in the worldwide event, with over 1,500 in attendance of their local competition. The Global Rocket Launch Challenge welcomed people across the world to launch any rocket at any time on July 16th. More than 60,000 people across the globe participated in the challenge.
