Huntsville, AL – March 2014
Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation (INTUITIVE) recently hosted Circuit Judge Ruth Ann Hall. In addition to her duties as the Madison County 23rd Circuit Court Judge, she and other various civic leaders have been active in the initiation of the Veterans Court Program in the Huntsville area.
Veterans Court is a new program that holds veterans accountable for their crimes but recognizes the special challenges veterans of all wars face. Those challenges include mental illness, anger, physical pain and post-traumatic stress disorder, which can lead veterans to drug abuse, homelessness and crimes. Each case is assigned a mentor who is also a veteran and is certified through the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts and supports the veteran throughout the entire court process.
As the guest speaker at a luncheon held at INTUITIVE headquarters on March 26, she provided more information to employees about the development of the Veterans court, how it helps the veterans in our community, and how others can get involved. INTUITIVE currently has three employees actively supporting Judge Hall in her work by serving as mentors to those veterans involved in cases.
Judge Hall is passionate about assisting people who come before her with a wide range of needs, and she saw a need particularly for our veterans. “It is only proper that we do this for our veterans who have given do much for us” stated Judge Hall. “It is a need that is being recognized by many on our community and I am glad to have a small part in it.”
John Perry, Coordinator for INTUITIVE’s Veteran Information Program (VIP) commented “It all started a few years ago during another one of our monthly VIP group meetings. We were talking about how we had heard of success that pilot programs for Veterans Court had in other parts of the county. Then when we heard of plans to spread it across parts of Alabama we knew we wanted to be involved. A member of our VIP group, Brian Byrne, was the first volunteer to be trained and certified as a mentor for this program. Once involved he started recruiting others at INTUITIVE to be mentors.”
ABOUT THE VETERANS COURT
Veterans Court meets the needs of veterans in our community who suffer from mental illness and/or substance abuse issues. The court follows similar models from around the country which focus on the problems and challenges veterans face returning from combat. It is designed to handle cases involving veterans charged with non-violent crimes but not Class A felonies. The court offers diversion sentencing, which includes counseling and mental health services. The defendants are selected for the court by the district attorney’s office and the court meets on the first and third Fridays of each month.
