INTUITIVE Opens Model-Based Systems Engineering Collaboration Center

HUNTSVILLE, AL – June 2022 – Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation (INTUITIVE®) celebrated the opening of its newest lab today— the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Collaboration Center. The MBSE Collaboration Center, located at INTUITIVE’s headquarters in Cumming Research Park, will serve as a training and meeting space for our customers and employees. The center is equipped with a large format displays and dedicated MagicDraw workstations for INTUITIVE’s team of MBSE engineers and analysts. Outfitted with all the MBSE resources needed, INTUITIVE modelers can create Structural Diagrams, develop Use Cases, create Behavior Diagrams, generate requirements traceability, and perform parametric analysis for systems of interest.

The opening of the MBSE Collaboration Center comes after exponential growth of INTUITIVE’s MBSE capabilities and team. INTUITIVE’s MBSE team accounts for over 20% of the OMG (Open Management Group) Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP) – Model Users (MU), and over 15% of the OCSMP Model Builder Fundamental (MBF) level certificate holders in the state of Alabama. These certifications are a validation of the breadth and depth of INTUITIVE’s MBSE engineers’ knowledge within the systems engineering domain and its application to defense-based systems.

“INTUITIVE is investing in the future of MBSE and we are excited to open the doors to our new training space and lab, which helps us further meet our customers’ next generation systems needs,” said Casey Cooper, MBSE Program Manager. “MBSE has been a game changer across systems engineering disciplines and we are excited about what this new lab will do for MBSE. With the excitement surrounding model-based systems engineering and how it is changing the way we provide systems engineering support, this lab was no longer a nice-to-have, but a need-to-have facility.”

INTUITIVE’s MBSE APPROACH
Customers in the aerospace and defense sector expect speed, precision, and transparency in systems development. Achieving these objectives with a Document-Based Systems Engineering (DBSE) approach is a challenge. Risk can increase exponentially in complex systems as each adjustment in system requirements or design must be traced across multiple documents and engineering products. MBSE solves this problem by managing and storing system information within the context of a system model. This model allows System Engineers and designers to identify changes in real time and trace the ripple effect of those changes throughout the system. Still, many firms are not experts in MBSE—why? Transitioning from a document-based approach to a model-based approach is a lot like going from keeping a list in MS Excel to developing an SQL database. MBSE requires specialized skills, including proficiency with the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). Building those skills requires significant investment and a long-term commitment. For INTUITIVE, making that investment was an easy decision. The hardest problems in systems engineering (the kind INTUITIVE targets) are those with the most layers of interdependent operations – the very ones that benefit the most from MBSE.
