HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Sept. 25, 2018) – Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation (INTUITIVE®), an aerospace engineering and analysis firm headquartered in Huntsville, is fueling innovation as the presenting sponsor for this year’s NASA International Space Apps Challenge hosted in Huntsville, Alabama.
NASA Space Apps Challenge is a global hackathon that occurs in 48 cities around the world, bringing together coders, scientists, engineers, designers, storytellers, makers and builders to address global challenges issued by NASA. For the second year in a row, Urban Engine is hosting NASA’s Space Apps Challenge in Huntsville. The event will take place October 19-21 at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.
At a press conference held September 25, Huntsville was announced as the “Mainstage” city, receiving global recognition as the hub or “mission control” for the event. Previous mainstage cities have included New York City and Silicon Valley.
“We are honored to be selected as Mainstage and host this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage the community in something that can have massive, global impact,” said Toni Eberhart, executive director, Urban Engine. “Honoring Huntsville’s legacy in aerospace and aviation is something we’re so passionate about. To foster education and team collaboration in support of Space Apps, we’ll be providing a wealth of educational workshops at CoWorking Night which is designed to prepare teams and refine skills they’ll be using during the hackathon – and everything is being provided at no cost, thanks to our sponsors.”
INTUITIVE has built a reputation for community involvement and supporting technological development. Being the presenting sponsor for the Mainstage event is significant for INTUITIVE because it represents the company’s support of growth, development, and investment in the Rocket City.
“We are always looking for ways to innovate, to be at the forefront of technology, and to help foster our community’s economic development,” said INTUITIVE Co-founder and Chairman Harold Brewer. “Being able to partner with organizations such as Urban Engine, who’s paved the way for so many young, inspiring entrepreneurs, and NASA, the cornerstone of our community’s capabilities, is an honor.”
For each year’s Space Apps event, NASA designs challenges, and works with local host cities around the world to implement events where teams work intensively to design solutions over the course of a 48-hour period. This year’s challenges are centered around the theme of Earth and Space, and include categories such as structure development, earth discovery and education, natural disasters, space exploration, ways to better understand Earth’s cryosphere and more.
The event will feature weekend-filled agenda including a career and technology expo, Data Boot Camp, keynote speakers, and educational panels. Winners of the hackathon will have the chance to take home up to $10,000 in cash and prizes.
“SpaceApps challenges our young professionals to think outside the box and tackle real-world problems at global scale,” Brewer said. “We’ll have our own team in the challenge – and I encourage our talented community to do the same!”
